One word of caution: Most of the time when an
untrained person gets involved in garbage disposal repairs he has a great
chance of creating a "basket of disassembled parts" --
where your garbage disposal is a mess of parts that the garbage disposal repair
technician must then reassemble before he can even check what the
trouble is. Only once he has put the garbage disposal back together can
he repair the original problem. This, of course, ends up costing
you more for the same repair. In addition, if you get involved in
garbage disposal repairs which you are not familiar and experienced with,
it can be dangerous. This is because you deal with electricity and
mechanical systems, so you can easily injure yourself. The information
bellow is only for educational purpose and we don’t advise
anyone to do your own garbage disposal repair. For professional help call

GARBAGE disposals
A garbage disposal may or may not be permitted in your community,
this useful home appliance made news some years ago when municipalities
banned it by ordinance, claiming it created problems in their sewage
garbage disposal systems. Now, however, disposals are to require in all
new construction in an increasing number of communities because
the appliance lessens the burden of public waste garbage disposal as sewage
treatment plants are updated in more and more comet unities, it
is expected that many of the present bans will be removed.
You may have wondered whether a disposal can be used with fit septic
system. After considerable study, engineers have concluded that
a garbage disposal unit can actually be beneficial to the action of a tank.
However, you should usually install a larger tank. The engineers
recommend a 750-gallon tank for two to three persons with 500 gallons
without. For four persons, a 1,000-gallon tank should lip used rather
than 750 gallons; for six persons a 1,500-gallon tank rather than
a 1,000-gallon tank. The disposal may also increase frequency of
tank cleaning. On the average a tank will have to lip cleaned every
seven or eight years. With a disposal it may have to be cleaned
every six or seven years, or an increase of about 10 percent.
There are two basic types of disposal, and the differences between
the two should be considered when service is necessary. The colt
tenuous-feed type has a wall switch to control the disposal aloha
The batch-feed type has the switch within the sink stopper, and
von must place the stopper in a certain position and turn it before
1110 disposal will operate. Other than the switching action, however,
there's little difference between the two. Batch-feed units are
sumo what more expensive, but installation may he less expensive
4hillif no separate switch is less convenient feed disposals.
disposals still look much the same as they did when the first ones
come out after World War 11 but the inside story is another matter.
Movements in materials and designs have been rather drastic. The
disposal is more serviceable, has a longer life, is quieter and
is much more efficient in waste grinding than early disposal models.
The usage of the disposal may add years to its life. This is even
ratite important than with most appliances. Check the owner's manual
see what you can or cannot dispose of in your particular equipment.
The most part, though, a modern disposal is used for the term generally
applied to food scraps, meat scraps corn even the bones that usually
are discarded in a garbage can. As they have improved, so have the
number and types of items a disposal can handle. This benefits the
owner and adds to the life of the disposal. An example is a buildup
of citric acid that commonly occurs with boil grinding fruits in
the disposal. However, an occasional steak bone the cutting element
cleans this acid from the body of the 1 horse power before it can
do damage. Not so long ago some service technician occurred similar
problems by running a pop bottle through the garbage disposal. It
took manufacturers considerable time to convince them that wasn't
the thing to do. Actually, in most cases, the practice may not harm
the disposal unless the disposal utilizes plastic shields components.
But the glass particles tend to build up in traps in flower lines,
making it necessary to call a plumber.
At food enters the hopper or mouth of the disposal it falls upon
the impeller driven directly off the motor shaft. The impeller grinds
the food outward toward the outer edge of the disk that has cutting
elements. As the food slams into the side of these teeth grind it
into particles fine enough to be safely calf led into the drain
by a flow of cold water, always necessary when using disposal.
