One word of caution: Most of the time when an
untrained person gets involved in air conditioning repairs he has
a great chance of creating a "basket of disassembled parts"
-- where your air conditioning is a mess of parts that the air conditioning
repair technician must then reassemble before he can even check
what the trouble is. Only once he has put the air conditioning back
together can he repair the original problem. This, of course, ends
up costing you more for the same repair. In addition, if you get
involved in air conditioning repairs which you are not familiar
and experienced with, it can be dangerous. This is because you deal
with electricity and mechanical systems, so you can easily injure
yourself. The information bellow is only for educational purpose
and we don’t advise anyone to do your own air conditioning
repair. For professional help call us to schedule your repair appointment

Solving Room Air Conditioner Problems
A room air conditioner performs four separate operations on the
air condition room. It cools the air by refrigeration. It removes
moisture, lint, lowering humidity and making you more comfortable.
It circulates the air through the room, sometimes also providing
ventilation. And it filters out dust.
When trouble occurs, you may eventually spot the cause within one
or several of these four spheres of operation. So before you attempt
a diagnosis, it will pay you to understand just exactly what takes
place with this fine piece of home machinery and how it's all done?
AIR CONDITIONING REFRIGERATION SYSTEM
These components of the basic refrigeration system are probably
easier to identify in a room air conditioner than in any other refrigeration
appliance. Because of the construction typically used in such situations,
you can readily see parts such as the evaporator and condenser tied
can easily determine the heating and cooling effects which exist
in carious points.
Remember to transfer this knowledge to your work on refrigerators
and any other refrigeration appliance where individual components
may not be so accessible. The actual berating temperatures will
vary among appliances, depending upon design of the equipment and
the use for which it is intended you wouldn’t expect the evaporator
on a freezer, for example, to be as wet as the one on an air conditioner.
But the basic principle is the still, it's still the evaporator
where the heat is being absorbed and where the cooling effect is
noted.
Components outside air conditioning system are also very important.
Suppose air flow across file condenser is blocked because the fan
motor hats stalled. When the air flow stops, enough units cannot
be removed to reduce the vapor to the point when help condensation
occurs. The refrigeration stops.
Testing the air conditioning System
Two simple tests will indicate whether a sealed system is operating
efficiently.
1) Run the unit about ten minutes with the blower on high speed
Then, with a thermometer check the temperature of' the air conditioning
unit, and that of the air coming out. You should find a difference
or at least 20 degrees. Take this measurement after the air conditioner
has been in operation for at least live minutes. This reading will
vary with blower speeds, with the lowest temperatures being found
at the lower speeds.
2) Mock the air flow over the evaporator coil with a blanket. The
evaporator should frost over within a few minutes. Remove the blanket
quickly; operating the unit like this for any length of time might
cause liquid refrigerant to slug back into the compressor.
If your system doesn't check out as above, call in a trained air
conditioning repair technician. Repair of a sealed refrigeration
system requires special equipment and training. But most other functions
of the air conditioner are not game for home repairs.
Don't condemn the cooling system until everything else has been
checked out. Remember what I've said before it's the least likely
source of a problem in a refrigeration appliance. A malfunction
in any other components, such as a slow-turning evaporator fan or
a clogged filter, will make their effects shown in the manner in
which the refrigeration operates; this does not mean, however, that
the system is, at fault.
If your air conditioner is less than ten years old, chances are
it has a slide out chassis, which can be pulled forward after you
remove the Boot grille. Most components may be serviced by pulling
out the t basis only partially. If yours does not have a slide-out
chassis, you may have to remove the unit from the window and take
apart the air conditioning.
